how do i change the color and material of a door object

this is another nooby question. why when i just the material of my door from wood to steel, the whole door change to grey and i lost all my glass opennings in my door? this there a way to change the frame of my door to another material/color but still able to keep the glass opennings?

And it is a good question, too.
Elements surfaces can be controlled through their internal dialog where all the parts are assigned separately, or more simply with an overarching material control.
If you look inside the Object/door/window dialog, you'll see a " Use Object Material" check box. This is the command that toggles from simple to detailed material assignments.
There is also a toggle in the info box.
