locked/hidden layers

Here's something that has bugged me for a long time. Say I want to place an object on plan. However, that layer is locked and or hidden in that particular layer combination. I have the dialogue box open, but have to close it, then open the layer combos, then unlock or show that layer, close that dialogue box, then reopen object tool and place.

Is there any way to unlock/show a particular layer while still in the object dialogue box without closing/opening/closing/opening various boxes.

Not really. What we need is another button on the layer warning that says "Show layer and update current Layer Combination" when the default layer is off.
