looooong wait for AC 8 to power up

Hi,

This is more a comment than anything else... Our central server (which all files are on) is under repair today, so everyone copied the files they needed to their own computer.

I'm running OS 10.3 & AC 8v3 on a dual 1Ghz G4 and I have to wait about 15-20 minutes for the login screen for ArchiCAD dissapears and it tells asks me what I want to open... After I browse and point to the file, then I'm almost home with a 10 minute wait for it to tell me that the libraries are not there (which is true). When I point to the right libraries, then it seems to speed up a bit, but that's still a 1/2 hour wait to open a simple drawing!

The only thing that changed is the Server that's not there. It will take that same amount of time even if I pull the network plug out of the back. I tried re-installing AC, and that did nothing. Everything else on the computer seems to run fine.

Well, your plotter was probably on that computer, and you plotted from ArchiCAD or PlotMaker?

ArchiCAD does remember the network config and what is loaded from where; we had a pretty mess a month or so ago for the same reason. The first resave solved the problem.
I never plot from ArchiCAD, so I thought it was strange that it wanted to connect to it. But it doesn't matter anyhow, because like you said, saving the file fixes it.

Yes, saving the file with the updated locations of libraries & such seems to settle the problem... but our server here changed name, so every single file we open is going to take forever (at least the first time we open them).

I tried with AC7 & AC6 files, and they tell me right away it can't find libraries (which is what it should be, in my mind) and then just point & click and you're done. Why is AC 8 different? Is there a way to bypass this 1/2 hour wait?

I just copied a file from the office server to my laptop to work on at home and the file is taking a HUGE amount of time to load. (loading in the background as I type). Not sure what it is related to except it is probably looking for the libraries that won't be found as the path needs to be changed to the laptop.

8.x is preserving relative paths, so that you don't have to relink everyhting, search for libraries, etc. This is the downside.

I finally got the file to open on my laptop. Lots of frustration though! I hit the command period several times and after awhile the file released. When I move the file back to the server this morning, it took a little longer to load than usual, but not an extremely long time. Anyway I got the modifications in and I was able to relink a entire layout book to an alternate design. The new plotmaker is great!

This happened to a couple of people at our office that work on laptops off the network. The first work around that I have tried with pretty good success was a clean install. I removed all previous preferences (AC and plotmaker) files I could find on my machine. I removed the plotmaker files because BGArchicad was launching extremely slow when off the network as well. After removing everything I performed a clean install so the installer could not go link to existing prefs.

I worked a couple of weeks with no noticable slow down until yesterday. Without AC launched, I opened a file copied from the network and hit the slow down bug. One quick suggestion that seems to have corrected this was to launch AC directly- create a new project- and use default setting. After the new untitled pln opens, open your project.pln file. This one step seems to reset the prefs. Maybe someone else in the group can elaborate on why this works or if truley does.

Sorry, that does not seem to work. This has to be corrected by Graphsoft. There should not have to be a work around to open a file.
