Hello

I'd like to ask the architects:

- imagine you live in a box made of glass, can you hear the noise around outside the box? a lot?

- imagine you live in a box made of textile, is it possible to build? is there any textile (like 'intelligent' textile) we can use as a wall and that could be able to stop the noise , as well as a dividing wall in plaster for example?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!! ... even if these questions seem stupid!

Charlotte. depending on the type and size of building , elements in it generally need to be resistant to fire. Steel inits raw state is poor and will collapse undr a fire load and as such needs to be encased or coated.
The glass idea could work acoustically it would be like having two windows but 3mm sounds a bit thin (physically and acoustically)
sorry, I meant 30 mm glass panels !!! (not 3mm!) [mistake]

if I'm talking about a building of 6 storeys high? and around 11m large......; do you think i could make some glass passages for all the height and some passages that are around 36cm large on the 11m width...??

what can I use between the two glass panels if I can use IPN beams?? (between the floors, horizontaly)

thanks for your answer

australian codes say that vertical passages (shafts or risers more correctly) need to be fire isolated from the rest fo the floor. MAybe even the rooms that are being connected if they are residences or hotel rooms need to be fire separated. Glass isnt a very good insulator of not only sound but fire either. To be honset I am not sure what your concept is. What is trying to achieve?

just to separate some rooms (imagine a building for students) with glass!
and for all the height of the building then it will create like high empty glass passage...... what can i put inside this passage then???

thanks

(how to do a fire isolation??)

Certain materials and construction are certified by testing authorities- for instance a concrete block wall of a particular thickness might be rated as 90 minutes.
It is a large topic influenced by many factors, you might need to refer to your local building code

There are ways and means and i dont want to put you off your idea for purely technical reasons as glass can be fire rated or protected with sprinklers and assisted by making a suitable distance to the opposite wall (metres). A narrow shaft wont let much light (ie none) get to the lower levels.

It is affected by so many factors such as the use of the building - a place where you sleep needs to be better protected than one where you can just grab your bag and run!!

I think you need to get some local advice
Cheers John
