why quick selection is not working sometimes?

I noticed some times that quick selection during tracing and refrence is not working except i picked the griping points (hotspot) of object i wonder what is the reason it works perfectly when clicking on it without trace and refrence

Yes--Very annoying. I didn't notice that the glitch only happened with TRACE REFERENCE on however, so thank you for the tip.
