Hotlinks are grouping the whole project

I am having a problem with my hotlinks. Somehow they are magically grouping with the objects in the file and making it impossible to ungroup or suspend groups. They are even changing the layers of the other objects, basically ruining the file. Luckily I have had backup files both times, but can't figure out why this happened.
There were a few other old postings where this happened, but no resolution that I saw. We're working in 11 and haven't had this happen in the older versions. Any idea how to fix this or the reason for it?

Can you please send the files (main file in both correct and ruined state, hotlinked files, libraries used) to your ArchiCAD reseller, or GSUS tech support. They will send them to GSHQ for investigation.
