We have set up our navigator with folders for existing, sketch, developed design, DA approvals, working drawings, etc. Each folder has similar sub files. Using this system enables one to automatically generate consequetive and logical drawing numbers, create links with sections and details, and provide other benefits - according to Archicad gurusimos.
But.....
What happens when as-existing drawings are altered to create sketch designs? Working on the same model, creates all sorts of problems because altering walls, floors and roofs are not necessarily things that one can regenerate or reverse by selecting different staged drawing sets within the same file. Making revisions is not simply adding, or taking away floors, walls and roofs. For example, gaps left by the removal of walls need to be filled with 2D fills, or by altering join priorities. One can't just create millions of separate layers and combinations. In previous versions, the easiest way to deal with this was to create new files for different drawing stages - but this removed the automatic drawing numbering and continuity that AC10 authors claim for the current version.
Back to my question - how can it be done within the same model?

I tend to have one PLN that is the original, untouched, existing condition., then another PLN for each option.

Use modules, linking to various hotlinks
Use layer sets for various options
All of the above discussed not a month ago.

USE SEARCH FUNCTION BEFORE ASKING A QUESTION
I've often given up in frustration trying to find what I need with a search on these boards... generally the search terms result in too many unrelated topics, with no reasonable way to find the appropriate discussion.
For example a search for "model schemes" eventually led me to a nice discussion on this topic, but I could have easily overlooked it since it was buried in a 37-page discussion on AC vs. Revit.
Cheers,
JB

The trick to any successful search is HOW you search. Maybe the key words were a bit different? Maybe the same thing can be said in a different way?
The main reason for bloating is repetition.
Glad that you have found the answer!
And no, it does not take any time to do a pink rant ...

No need to be narky!
Using the search engine has not been very helpful in the past - too many options and too many pages. I've been keeping an eye on this topic for some time and no one has explained how to do it. Revit can do it but Archicad can't. Of course I could spend all my time developing layers and combinations but it detracts from doing real work. However, I am open to helpful suggestions from commercial users who really know how to manage it.

the search engine is terrible.
multiple search terms expand rather than narrow a search
you can't search on topic only
the engine is oddly different from other internet forums I frequent.
it is useless, practically. I would use ArchiCAD talk as a resource much more than I did if the search engine was controllable.

Since I'm such a beginner though, reading those threads lead me on to learning something new and useful most of the time, but the answer to my original query will come by very rarely, almost by chance it seems.
Sometimes I have better luck searching Google with the results limited to the archicad-talk domain (under advanced search).

For the time being, try putting this inot your Google search:
site:archicad-talk.graphisoft.com design options
Gives back 266 results. Good reading ...
Thanks to Tom Waltz and Karl Ottenstein for the tips on this!
As Karl said, putting
site:archicad-talk.graphisoft.com <your keywords here>
enables Google Search of the site.
