Saving Criteria changes

I am unable to save changes to links between properties and criteria. Nor can I save changes to databases. When I try either one, I get an error message that says "Cannot write output file". Although the changes appear to be saved for that session, they are gone when I close and reopen the project.

I'm using AC8.1 v2 running on MacOSX 10.3 (Panther).

Any advice would be appreciated.
