BIM server starting too early (Mac)

Hello,

Situation: Mac OS X server with RAID5 storage mounted on /Volumes/Data
BIM config files on the Data disk.

Example: server stalled (not clear why), server is restarted.

What happens: i suspect the RAID set is checking the volume and BIM server starts while checking the volume, should be impossible because it can't find config files. BUT, BIM server makes the path /Volumes/Data/BIM server on the system disk (!!??), because of this the RAID set will mount on 'Data 1' and nothing will work on the server because all config files are on the RAID set.

Questions/remarks:
- non systems software should be started from /Library/LaunchDaemons, NOT from /System/Library/LaunchDaemons, you should put your software in the correct place, BIM server is NOT system software! Is there a way to change this?
Moving the launchdaemons to the place they should be breaks the BIM server manager!
- can i change the launchdaemon files with an additional watch path so the BIM server will start only when the path to the config files exists instead of stupidly making the path with default config files?
- where is the logging? This software is useless when it comes to trouble shooting, where can i enable some logging so i can at least try to troubleshoot?

Hope you can make me a bit more positive about this software, because atm I'm really not happy with it.

Arjen,

I will pass on your recommendation that we place our start up daemons for the BIM Server in the Library/LaunchDaemons folder.

As you correctly identified the issue, the BIM Server is coming on line sooner than the RAID disks. As a result it is not finding its databases. I can empathize with you. It certainly wasn't a very pleasant state, and you were probably concerned about your data. Fortunately, after this happens, if you stop the BIM Server application and restart it, it should find the database files without any data loss.

For the time being I would disable the "Start BIM Server with Operating System." This will prevent a similar issue when your system re-boots.

I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your response Ed.

For now i've disabled the 'Start when starting OS' option.
They can start the BIM server by hand when needed, luckily the reboots dont happen too often.

this thing has freaked me out some time ago as it knocked out whole data server for 20 people in our office. the BIM server daemon simply kicks in well before the OSX has all daemons running and ready.... FYI it is a problem on 10.5 and 10.6... not sure about Lion though. Only remedy is to prevent BIM server starting with OSX as you mentioned.
