Layout drawings usually load slow automatically when set to auto-update. However, when manual update is enabled, there's a higher risk of publishing outdated drawings by mistake. To avoid this, I suggest adding an option for drawings to update automatically only when publishing. This would allow architects to catch errors more easily in the PDFs—since they load quickly—and ultimately make the workflow more efficient.
Generally I find really helpful the drawing manager tool. It's really a good tool that allows to check what is not updated or not. You can manage the updating directly from it.
