Virtual servers and ArchiCAD?

Hi,

Does anyone run BIM server on virtual machines? We have an idea (but no hands-on knowledge) about running ArchiCAD BIM Server on virtual machines (wm ware) to reduce down-time if there is a hardware crash. Possible/smart/stupid/go/no-go?

Best regards,
Mats

I personally don't have any experience with it, but I know a firm in Melbourne that has successfully implemented their BIM Server on a virtual machine.

Cheers,

Hi Mats!
I've kept a training in a technical college with twenty pupil group in teamwork, BIM server running in a virtual server managed by their IT dept.
We modeled identical single family houses, one for everybody. I don't know the installation behind but it went well.

All Finnish basic trainings are kept in teamwork. We have a macmini as a server, and a laptop class (cable network).
Cheers,
Ville

We are running it in Windows Hyper-V without any issues. It was a little tricky getting the usb to pass through to also run the protection key on the VM.

Hi Michael,

Could you kindly elaborate on how you manage going around the issue with the Key being seen in the VM?
Thanx,

To use USB in the VM there is a 2 part software instalation. The main server is running a server and inside the vm is a client./ This is the software to make it work.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! I just wanted to know that it works! We will start virtualizing with wm-ware in a couple of weeks. Mats

Already end on january...

We've been running the BIM-Server on a virtual host with VM-ware for about a month now and everything is working fine.
