I am currently trying to join the bimcloud of a new collaborator, however I get an error saying that "the bimcloud was not able to reserve a license". I have my own license, so my AC runs fine. Does this mean that my collaborator has to have a free license for me? Is there a way for me to use my own license without making him buy a new one just for me? thank you

Please tell me this still isn't a problem. I explained the situation, and they knew both keys in my situation were on separate accounts. I was then sold what I thought would work. I enabled "Portable BIMcloud SaaS license assignment" on each account and assigned a license on each account, but neither of us can join a hosted project on the other's BIMcloud. We both tried hosting it to test it... We invited each other on each side as well. I really hope I am just missing a simple step...

Is the solution "Archicad Collaborate", and if so, do we both need "Archicad Collaborate" or just one of us?

I've also been having the same problem with trying to connect to another company's bimcloud. The funny thing is that it's been working fine in our company for a year and a half (although only with two existing "old-school" SaaS licenses, managed through our company's bimcloud.com, but not with the new "cloud" licenses, which are now managed at licensemanagement.graphisoft.com) and now last friday it stopped working for one "old" license (mine) and the other one (my coworker's) is still fine and all I get is this message: "the bimcloud was not able to reserve a license" when trying to login to the other company's server.
I have the Archicad Collaborate license and license portability set to portable (on licensemanagement.graphisoft.com) which means: "This license can also be used on other companies’ BIMcloud SaaS." But I guess this doesn't mean anything right now...
Both companies still use Archicad 26, but I tested it with the latest updated Archicad 28, and it's exactly the same.
Today I logged in to our company's bimcloud.com and saw there's some maintenance for bimcloud SaaS coming this weekend, so fingers crossed this fixes it.

I finally got it to work, connecting to their BIMcloud. I still have a perpetual license, and I am not sure if that is what is preventing me from having them join mine. I added SaaS to my account with my key. I consider myself fairly tech-savvy, and this is not the most user-friendly setup, in my opinion. It seems overly complicated, but that might be due to the new changes to how licenses work and still incorporating our hardware keys (which I think should not be going away, but that is a whole different topic...).

Congrats! Yes, I think it's the current weird mix of perpetual licenses and cloud licenses that's causing these problems. I agree, It's totally complicated right now, but I think they're doing the right steps to making it simpler, it will just take time. Hopefully a few weeks not years...
