.3ds object material/rendering issue

Can anyone help me out with some GDL trees. I need some exotic in door plants to use in my scene. I have found some on 3dplant.com in a 3ds format. My problem with that is when i try to apply the UV map that comes with it, I get a black image when i render out my scene. This also happens when i bring in any 3ds file. I have mapped the file in max but when i bring it into archicad i still see it in my scene as a black object.

please do NOT ask the same question in multiple forums. Yes, this is both an object related and a presentation related question, but you have to decide where to put the question. Either or.
