Cardboard Model

I am trying something different with some renderings. I have noticed when we do renderings for our clients at the beginning of a project they get stuck on the colors or materials I have chosen instead of looking at the design. So I have played with an idea of showing off the design without using materials or colors that would throw off a client. What do you guys think? BTW, they were rendered in Artlantis Studio.

I think the cardboard virtual model idea is great --it makes it very clear that you are talking massing only. With a single-material rendering that is not model-figurative as cardboard is the problem is that it is never really clear whether it is the model or the building the one that is not meant to have material diversity or texture or color variations.

But what I think is awesome is what you just did in this thread, which is showing at the same time the material-finishes model, same viewpoint, same rendering technique. By doing that you are making the two discussions clearly separate from the start, and bringing them up from the start --it is nice to know early in the process if there may be a problem with the material palette/s you think might do the job and how you are thinking it could be used in your design, and you don't get that from the massing/sketchy model.

Very true Ignacio. Although that single material massing keeps the client looking at the form, you still have to figure out what materials they (or
you as a designer) like on the building. I had not thought about showing the client the massing rendering first and then after that show them some material renderings options. That way the argument of color can be taken care of after the design has been discussed.

I like this concept very much. I am finding the daytime ground plane distracting, though, due to the high color saturation. (The nighttime render fixes this, of course.) Maybe something more like chipboard for the ground would help focus attention on the building.

now that i read this again i didnt like my comment and i apologize...myself im getting into not showing colors or realistic
anymore unless askd for.....somebody else in our company just
did a rendering (2 days ago) of a church and kind of ..im ok with it..im sharing it if i can load it up.....this is just ac & photoshop
(edit: now that i see this in detail..it seems that artlantis was there also)

Thanks for the comments Richard. Good idea about changing the ground plane to a different material to make the building pop more.

I have attached my first attempt at doing a solid color rendering.
Its kind of a clay look I guess?

BTW Raul, I like the design of your church. In my area its hard to get a building built without it being a metal building. Then you try to dress it up.
