Maxwell Render - The Light Simulator

If you are interested in a new rendering engine for ArchiCAD, check out Maxwell Render.

If you want THAT TYPE OF REALISM in your images, you need to take the jump into the Maxwell universe.

You might be thinking it is difficult. I used to think that way. Guess what? It isn't all that difficult. Within just a few hours I have been able to come to grips with the interface, navigation and material editor.

"But isn't it Slooooooooow?", you quip... No. In many ways it is actually fast. The reason it is so fast is because it is predictable. You don't need to think about Global Strength, Occlusion, Shadow Sampling settings, etc, etc.

It is extremely architectural, place your crosshairs on the hires Earth globe, think google earth, now position your project with north arrow - specify the year, month and time of day. Check Physical Sky and you have just successfully finished the lighting of an exterior.

It has a function that takes just 1 or 2 minutes to generate a fuzzy preview. Very fast and useful.

Here is the clincher, you can also do much of it from within ArchiCAD 10. Yup, NextLimit is working hard to create the connections (plug-ins) between ArchiCAD 10 and Maxwell. PC will come first (as usual Mac comes next) What's exciting about the Mac development is Universal App - Mactel support. Have you heard about the Quad Core Intel chips coming out soon? Imagine a MacPro with dual Quads. All of them working on your images at once. The future is looking kinda bright.

I will post within this thread more info as it become available to me, and I will give you a peek at some of the programs more useful features.

Mark, I'm just curious, did you test render the rocking chair scene in Artlantis R or Studio too?

No I don't have that program.

You know something Tom,

I would like to try repeating an effort from the ArchiContest past.

I will gather support from rendering software vendors, at the end of the RenderFest on December 15th, we will place the software packages in a special silent donational event. The proceeds from the event will benefit the Habitat for Humanity - 100%.

Send an email along with your Name and Location to: ArchiCAD@cox.net

Once you do that you are qualified to become a silent donator. Full details will be emailed you after you register.

Have fun and be creative!

Now that the new release of Maxwell Render is out for the Macintosh, it is Universal Binary. Just running the program on a normal PPC Mac (Dual Processor GHz), results in a strong render speed improvement.

There have been improvements to the Cinema4D exporter too. These two great improvements allowed me to test the OX_Theater file again. This time I took it from Cinema4D into Maxwell. The result of 30 minute render is reduced to half size below.

If I wasn't being chased by a Gladiator or Lion, I am sure I would have been impressed with this place.

The Maxwell team has released a new version of the SketchUp 5 plugin.

Works great, I tested it with an example model from the SketchUp web site.

A test of an ArchiCAD building file saved as 3ds, imports into SketchUp 5 without any problems. As Tom has pointed out, this works well as a way to share a live 3D model, save as SketchUp and ask client to use SketchUp Viewer to study work in progress.

Also you can export Model Data as MXS (Maxwell) and it immediately launches Maxwell Render, see inset image.

Textured Models from:
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/

Translate from Sketchup to Maxwell.

Check out what "five" has done with a simple SketchUp model with a combination of Maxwell textures and SketchUp textures.

interesting thread. thanks to mark for point it out to me.
i have used maxwell since it was in the alpha stage and i have to say that i love what it has to offer. it is def more like a taking a photo than rendering now due to how it works. i also have to agree that there are loads of negative things/ issues with maxwell and i hope they all get addressed.
