I purchased Cinema 4D 8.2 and was wondering what the best way to export from Archicad and workflow. How does the rendering time vs result compare to Artlantis. Just purchased Piranesi also, I believe you can create a Epix file directly in C4D now

thanks
Lots of new toys! 😉

I only have C4D XL 7 - so AFAIK, there I have to use 3DS and Vedute to go into Piranesi. Nice if 8.2 allows it directly.

3DS format works well from AC to C4D. See various notes and comments in the archives at:

http://www.escribe.com/software/archicadtalk/

and there are also some good comments at:

http://www.fred-speaks.com/phpBB2/index.php

Some of those guys will hopefully re-post their comments here with some nice screenshots of the parameter settings dialogs (hint, hint).

As for speed, comparing C4D and Artlantis is difficult because C4D can do so much more than Artlantis, particularly as far as lighting goes...if you have the "Advanced Render" module (or the XL package). For comparable quality on a fast computer, I don't know that you'd see the difference. With a dual processor, C4D wins since Artlantis won't use the other processor. As soon as you use a radiosity solution, C4D will start to slow down (the race depends on your parameters and number of processors - or even network rendering, and option there and not with Artlantis) - but the results will astound you compared to Artlantis 'global illumination'.

[For example: if the C4D 8.2 CD contains some of the same sample scenes as XL7... look for a folder called 'Radiosity-LIght'. There's a JPG there ("Light") that is a wonderful demonstration of lighting effects that C4D can do and Artlantis cannot even come close to. Load the sample scene file in C4D and render it as a sample of how long such a thing takes on your computer. Not bad at all on mine. I've attached a cropped section of that image for others to see here ... image copyright Maxon Computer I should imagine.]

Including human time, Artlantis is a no-brainer IMHO - wins hands down for quick renderings.

Even if you cannot create the EPix file in C4D ... you can create the file in AC or Artlantis, then render the (same sized) image in C4D and finally import that image as the new Save RGB channel in Piranesi. Mix and match.

Have fun!

Karl

Here is another useful link, this one regarding HDRI Lighting.

I was just testing a HDRI model setup with C4D, I added an archicad model into the scene and produced a 90 frame animation. BTW it took about 1.5 hrs. - approx. 1 frame per min.

Anyway, can someone tell me which setting I need to change to eliminate the rounded areas on the final few frames. This is just a test in order to learn the HDRI light settings. Thanks

HDRI lighting is something else, eventually I will learn how to control it and utilize it for placing a rendering into an existing scene (photo). That is where it gains it best use. Using the Uffizi_probe I generated the above image. Please excuse the repeated use of this ArchiCAD model, I am too lazy to export any others.

Another test using the same probe,... that somehow sounds clinical.

Mark,

I'm not sure what -all- your settings are, but the basic look of your render doesn't _seem_ to differ from what we can get (quickly - 5 mins or so) with just 'soft shadows' turned on.

Do you want to do a side-by-side comparison?

... but HDRI is *great* for incorporating a sky / photographic entourage.

Stuart my friend,

Yes, by all means. I don't post this stuff in an effort to show what is the best method, technique or style. It is creative play. Hummm, what does this effect yield? HDRI?

Today I am going to study the use of TAGS.

I would like it if more C4D users would post their attempts. After all, that is the best use for this new graphical discussion board.

Anim with the same settings: Pre-Sets from the Uffizi Sample File.

Well, I only have the demo-version, so it's hard to work long enough on it. My CE-version does not have radiosity (it's based on C4D XL6).

But keep going. And share your experiences.

9 is Fine. I am speaking of course about my first week with ArchiCAD v9 (&) Cinema 4D v9. Both of these programs make is very easy to work and get creative. The ArchiCAD to C4D translator is currently being improved to work with both of these stellar programs. I will post some thoughts about them as soon as I receive the update.

Meanwhile, exploring the demo files supplied with C4D I created this scene showing Stephan's Castle in Belgium.

O.K., I'll go back to real work now, but just one more post. A rendering of a sample file by Mike Batchelor. This one is done with radiosity, 100% strength, 100% accuracy, 1/2 pre pass size, Diffuse depth 2, samples 90, min resoluton 30, max 50.

2:57 min on G5 Dual Mac 2GHz. Radiosity takes a long time? Think nothing of it.

On your mark, get set, go. 1 min. 54 sec. DONE - Nice street material and car for a driveway scene. This file is a sample also supplied free with C4D.

Why do I keep posting this stuff? Well if your goal is to create a realistic and artistic scene in and around your building model, this stuff is pre-made to drag&drop. Other rendering programs should also provide such useful additions to their software offerings. I haven't even begun to explore the slew of architectural textures supplied with the ArchiCAD Translator.
