Shadow lines in sketch renders.

I have been playing around with the sketch render settings and I can't seem to get the outline of the shadows to turn off. IMO it looks a bit naff so I would like just show the shadow hatches.

The shadow line settings don't seem to have any effect on it.
Is there something I have missed? Is it actually possible?

I find it much more effective to render the shadows in shaded mode and overlay the sketch render in Photoshop.

nice idea matthew, i'd like to see an example of which your talking about with a brief description of the two steps...
Do you mean you render the view with lightworks or int engine and composite shadows over sketch render??

I'll see what I can do about posting an example. I am just finishing up a trip to Europe, but perhaps I can do it at the hotel tonight before I go. Things will probably be crazy when I get back.

If you do not like the outline of the shadows (I don't know of anyone who does) There is a way to get what you want all in ArchiCAD.

In 3D view your can save the shadows separately by using the marquee tool, last one on the right. Copy and a menu pops up to save construction elements or shadows or both, etc....save only the shadows. Paste into a plan view.
Now get rid of the sun ( several ways to do this) and sketch render. Drag the shadows on to the image.

Now here is an even better way.

Instead of sketch render, generate a hidden line view.

Copy using the same technique with the marquee. Now when you past the hidden line view into the plan view, select all of the lines and edit them to a wavy sketch line type. Now put our shadows on that.

You can edit every line for clean up. That will save you lots of modeling time, and you can do anything you want with the shadows.





Be sure you have ~archiben and Link explain this to you since they say that what you see in this picture is not possible.

I thingk shadows only looks kind of cool.

To be honest, although I like the traditional wavey-line images, I do prefer the sketch rendering mode. I feel they have a much softer hand drawn effect. Its a shame you can't just turn off the blooming line! They've even left a nice space to add the setting - (see below!)

You probably wouldn't draw a line around your shadows if you were doing it by hand, so I'm not sure why the sketch rendering is trying to show one!

Yes, I agree with you. I hope they get it fixed someday.

If you put the shadows on a sketch rendered image, you can deal with the scale issue by Resizing the image. Draw a line to some known dimension of something in the image and resize the image to match it.
Also, it might help to use the transparent setting for your image.

The drawing I posted above was made like that. I a got the photo from the county tax assessors office and used it to model the house before even going to the job site. It helped the contractor I made the drawings for bid the job and win the contract.

The project is actually only a remodel over the existing garage.
I wanted to show them how it would look with what's existing.
