How do I get the shadow edges to be 'soft'?
ps. looking forward to my book, then perhaps I won't need to ask such basic stuff...

Water effect:
We are well-served by ArchiCAD's default water - emulating a chlorinated pool water with some wavyness.

… making convincing water is all about the environment - contextual placement of other objects and surfaces to support water's beguiling transparency, refraction and reflectivity.
This illustration, from page 119 of "LightWorks in ArchiCAD" shows how differing underwater surfaces affect water's character.

-- glass effects:
like water, glass effects require careful placement of reflective surfaces to create interesting reflections/refractions in glass...
Find articles on glass on pages 126-133 of

Re: material adjustments.
It is true that materials require adjustment, usually because they are too reflective.
My book and seminar show a fool-proof method for modulating material reflectivity to balaced light levels under most conditions:
The 60-40-20 rule, page 88-89.
And also the baseball scores: 6-2, 3-1, 8-5.
