Make sure when editting materials to have the Lightworks Rendering Engine option, (not Internal Engine or OpenGL) then all the shader settings will be there in front of you: Colour, Reflectance, Transparency, Displacement, Texture Space, and Pipeline. If you are starting with an existing material its probably a good idea to click on "Match Internal Engine" to get started, and then modify as necessary.

Here's how to most easily adjust transparency, based in percentages. "Plain coverage."
If you wish to use color as a transparency metaphor, use the "plain" shader.
