I have used that technique before but turned off the shadows in the sketch render. Makes the sketch render a lot quicker, and the shadows from the photo render do the job anyway.
But, have you made sure you have "use Archicad sun position" checked in render settings?

Yes, I did have "use Archicad sun position" checked.
I too have done it as you described but for this particular project I wanted the shadow in the sketch render.
I will have to tweak the sun for the sketch render at the moment until it seems to overlay correctly.
