The demand for non-American software alternatives is growing, and Archicad stands out as a notable example of non-American BIM software. This can be especially important in scenarios where users are cut off from American technology.
However, since Archicad only runs on macOS and Windows — both American platforms — it cannot truly be considered a viable alternative for avoiding American tech. Therefore, Archicad should be ported to run natively on Linux.
I imagine, this would not be a huge development task, since macOS is already UNIX Certified.
This discussion has been here for 20 years already, and Graphisoft kept silent about it all the way. I dont think we will get this any time soon. its like Fusion reactor promises. But here, I tossed my vote.
I would like to see Archicad working on other platforms than Windows and OS. (for example Linux) The world is changing, and reliable partners might turn out less reliable than we thought.
[From the merged wish.] There is already a wish for Linux: https://community.graphisoft.com/t5/Wishlist/Archicad-on-Linux/idi-p/632798 . While your wish is more general, I think Linux is the only realistic third way at the moment and foreseeable future... BSD users are free to voice their differing opinion :).
We are know – given the special circumstances in Denmark/Greenland – getting this as request from users.
Last week I tried installing Archicad 29 on Linux using Wine 11. The installation process works, but when trying to start Archicad, there are som errors in the startup process, so we had to give up.
This should be rather easy for GRAPHISOFT to fix with minor ressources to just fo minor changes to the software. I think making Archicad startup in Wine on Linux should be prioritized for Archicad 30.
I would love to jump to Linux but being wed to archicad is the only thing stopping me.
I feel like a lot of archicad users are people who instinctively look for an option outside the biggest providers so this seems like a build it and they will come situation, if archicad worked on Linux I think a significant number of users would switch.
Might even make me feel better about being shoved into a subscription service...
I would like to strongly reinforce the need for a native Archicad version for Linux. Currently, Archicad is the only software preventing our office from fully migrating to a Linux-based workflow. As architects, we rely on professional, stable, and predictable environments, and the current direction Windows is taking—with increasing telemetry, forced updates, and overhead—feels increasingly disconnected from what is expected of a professional workstation OS.
Furthermore, the requirement for Windows Server to run BIMcloud is becoming a significant bottleneck. In 2026, it is almost unthinkable for modern, scalable services to rely on legacy server environments. Finding IT professionals who specialize in Windows Server is becoming harder and more expensive, as the industry has overwhelmingly shifted to Linux for server infrastructure due to its security, performance, and automation capabilities.
If Graphisoft wants to remain at the forefront of BIM technology, supporting a Linux environment—both for the client and the server—is no longer a niche request; it is a necessity for offices looking for a modern, professional, and independent infrastructure.
