Demolished Windows & Doors should leave an Empty Opening

JPugh

At present, a demolished window or door leaves no trace in the proposed view, but in reality it needs to be infilled with new construction (which may differ from the make up of the original wall).

Using a renovation filter to 'show' the removed windows would mean showing everything else too, and perhaps in an undesirable representation.

At present we insert a 'New' empty opening in place of the Demolished element, in order to have a hole that can be filled with a new wall.  This works ok, but seems like a workaround rather than a reflection of reality, more steps than should be necessary, requires workarounds in schedules so the 'new' openings don't show, and is non-associative to the dimensions and position of the original window, should they need to be amended.

Please could there be a setting to allow demolished opening objects to remain 'visible' but replaced with the Empty Opening?

option to choose either "keep opening" or "close opening".

Often a former window-opening in a concrete wall is closed by masonry and fairly often in a different thickness.

IF "colse opening" THEN

- choose building material

- chose wall thickness

Back to @JPugh 's original wish.

I would say it can be done now.

Existing wall with window set to be demolished.

This will create a 'new' wall to infill the opening.

Then in the 'Proposed' renovation filter you don't show or override the to be demolished elements (you hide them), but you 'override' the new elements and the infill wall will show as hidden in the plan and elevation.

Thanks for giving this the time and thought @Barry Kelly, but won't this override all of my other proposed elements as well?

I think I see your issue.

If you are 'Overriding' new elements, then ALL new elements will be seen with the same override style - that is what I was showing but with just one window.

But if you are 'Showing' new elements then the 'new' wall automatically generated in the demolished opening will look exactly the same as the existing wall and therefore will blend seamlessly and you won't see it.

So, if your are 'Showing' existing and 'Showing' new, you will not see where the window hole has been filled in the wall.

In that case, for the 'Proposed' filter I would suggest to override the existing elements so they are greyed out and 'Show' the new so they stand out.

That is actually what the default '04 New Construction' filter does.

Then have 'Final' filter that 'Shows' existing and new (hides demolished) so you can see the model as it is intended to be.

That is actually the default '05 Planned Development' filter.

Otherwise, I was going to suggest creating a graphic override that looks for 'new' windows and changes their appearance.

But the problem with that is the window is not showing because it is being demolished, so can not be overridden with a GO.

Archicad automatically adds a 'new' wall to the opening, but it is not a new independent wall, it is just the opening is no longer there.

So the 'new' wall can not be overridden with a GO either.

The only way is to add a new independent wall where the demolished window is.

Than can then be overridden with a GO that looks for new walls in a particular layer or with a particular ID.

Hm... If you Override New Elements, there seems to be no way to change the representation of demolished penetrations?

No because the opening object itself is 'to be demolished'.

The 'new' wall is not really a new wall, it is just the existing wall now showing because there is no opening anymore.

I guess what is needed is for the opening extents to still show.

The opening is there (in 3D at least - oddly not in plan).

The logic of Archicad says that because the existing and new are showing and the new is exactly the same wall as the existing, they will join seamlessly.

The extent of the opening still needs to show or we need to control the new wall with a different surface material, but we can't

As I showed before, you can create a filter to show the existing and override the new, but all new elements will of course be overridden.

It seems JPugh wants to show the existing and show the new but still highlight the fact that there is a new wall in the existing where the opening was.

There seems to be no way to isolate that new wall insertion without actually adding a new wall yourself.

I mean if you use the Renovation Filters Override options. Seems to work now. Earlier it was showing the hole as red dashed even if none of the filters matched. There is no way to limit the target to openings though...
