3D cut away planes

For some reason I can no longer use 3D cut away planes. I can open it, but the 2d images do not show in the respective boxes. Any help will be appreciated.

I had this happen in 8.0 a few times, but never quite narrowed down what caused it. Haven't seen it in over a year. Clearing planes, closing the dialog, then re-opening usually fixed it.

It is an 8.1 project that is having trouble. The problem seems to be project specific because I'm able to use cut-away on other 8.1 projects. closing and reopening the dialog box has not worked for me.
