3DS Import

I used to be able to import OBJ-files into ArchiCAD with surface smoothing intact.

http://www2.asro.kuleuven.ac.be/asro/English/HOME/SBs/tutorial/tips/viz2ac.htm
(Explained with 3DStudio VIZr3, but this will work in Maya as well, since Alias|Wavefront was the inventor of the OBJ-format).

AFAIK, ArchiCAD 8.x doesn't read OBJ-files anymore

Another solution, slightly worse, but better then DXF for that matter is importing it as a 3ds-file (Maya should be able to do that, you might need to download some translator-plugins, though).

This 3ds-import was once mailed to me by some German ArchiCAD user and I can send the full plugin to you if you want (it was free, so I don't think I break any copyrights here).

Hi.

I have downloaded this plug in and installed it with no difficullty to AC 8.0 R1. It works right now as I am writing. It is not perfect (I dont speak german well) and it should be fo AC8.1 also, but it works. I have international (english) version of AC and I work on Win XP. It work also in Student version of AC 8.0.

Ashley.
It's quiet easy really. After you have installed the importer into the right directory, you simply go to your extras menu and take 3ds converter.

I think the guys who did this coverter should also be recognized. A huge thanks to Balazs Piri and his team at cadprojekt and Stefan Larsson at Graphisoft for getting this converter done, finally, good work guys

Now that's a real possibility!! Something we (or at least I) never thought about. Good thinking Djorde!!!
Perhaps you might also want to let Stefan in on that last line.
I don't like the tone this discussion is getting...
What's that supposed to mean? All I did was point out that the plugin doesn't work with my AC as was the case with a few other members. Djordje then pointed out the possibility, (which seems to have a lot of merit to it, considering) that the problem might lie in the fact that I'm using the US version of ArchiCAD and you guys are presumably using the International version. I fail to see what tone is implied in any case, other than the fact that you seem entirely inflexible to the possibility that the plugins may not work with legitimate reasons for some people. As was erstwhile pointed out; Don't shoot the messenger.

In any case, as it seems like you must always have the last word I will leave it at that and as such, this is my last post regarding this issue.

So much for trying to help people. Please Bricklyne Clarence, maybe I missaid something in the way I write my English (I'm not a native speaker), but since I am not the one who made the plugin, I only linked it here so other people might take advantage out of it. I have no further control over what it does and how it works. It's not even an official add-on, so the only person that knows for sure is the developer. I have used it in the past so I know it works, but not to what extent and on what versions.

When I re-read this thread (that is a cut 'n paste of other threads), I fail to see why you are so irritated. If I said something wrong, please accept my appologies.

I can't for the life me figure out what anyone is upset about here (or if anyone really is). So I just edited out the above comical (I hope) interpretation. I assume this is partly a result of everyone being compelled to write in the language of Shakespeare and Thomas Jefferson.

If someone is actually upset, my apologies for making light of it. If we were in the pub I'd offer to buy a round and offer a toast to improved international relations after the (US) elections.

After downloading the file make sure that permissions to the file are set correctly so that full access is allowed for everyone. It might happen that the add-on denies access for ArchiCAD and therefore comes the error message.

It means that you overreacted. Frustration is understandable, but quarrel is not permitted.

And to end with a positive note: a link to the updated version of this plugin: now also for ArchiCAD 8.1

http://www.gshelp.de/CDownloads/Downloads81.html

And before it starts raining complaints: I tested it on 8.1 r2 INT version and it worked. Not that it didn't always gave the best results (some files work and some don't) and you have to know that the interface is in German, but at least the plugin is compatible.
