Elevation "line weight depth"

I am trying to show more detail in my elevation drawings. And without using a fill l cannot get any depth to the claddings. I'm sure Archicad was not meant to be used this way.

I have an example of what l'm trying to achieve. The elevation 'without fills' is just using the wall & roof properties. The elevation "with fills' (which l think is better because it shows a bit of depth and tells more of a story) is where l've drawn fills over the top of the walls & roof. Since l can apply & show materials to walls & roof in archicad it seems strange that l can't show any depth. The garage wall could be 4m behind the front wall, but looking at the elevation you couldn't tell. If you can help me it would be fantastic. [/img]

You can use the "marked distant area" option in elevation settings to change the way elements beyond a specified distance display. This is not perfect, though, as you can only set one line as the change from near to distant (you can't step it like you can with the elevation line itself), and if that is half way up a roof plane you get odd results. Better solutions have been wished for for some time.

A search brought up THIS THREAD which shows why Revitsbetter.

I find that adding shadows can help portray depth, but that is not always the best solution either. Sometimes I just resort to tracing a bold line around close features, and update as necessary.

BTW you don't have to draw fills over walls and roof. You can assign fills to the appropriate materials and they will generate automatically.

Thanks Stuart, but sadly l've already tried this and it's not quite the same result.

While this is not a fix it is a very neat trick if you need to do bolder line work to the front.
I have seen stacked percentage fills set to a white pen (so it doesn't actually print) staged to give the look you're after.
(I think it was around 40% from memory)
So the first fill will cover the second and all levels back after that,
the second fill will cover the third level and so on and so on.
I personally don't worry about this and haven't had any on site issues with it in 14 years or so.
That said multiple marked distance areas that are able to step would be handy!
