Publishing JPEGs creates also .gpi files

I get a .gpi for each .jpg. What are those? I am trashing them with no apparent consequence.

Many applications cache data associated with the image file as a separate file.
It doesn't interfere with the actual image.

Do you have GIMP 2 installed?...
I've noticed the same behavior in my pc since I installed it...
