Shadows in Elevation

How do people generate shadows on elevations of an adjacent building?

For example:
I have a existing building directly adjacent to a new building. I want to see what shadows the new building will generate on the facade of the existing building. Obviously this can be done through viewing it in 3D but I need to create an accurate drawing of the elevation. To view the facade in the elevation the new building will be cut out from the view, hence not generating shadows.

Unless i am missing something it cannot be done.

If I understand what you're asking, you have to model the adjacent building facade, minimally as a large monolithic wall, and otherwise at the least detail that you have to model in order to 'capture' the shadow linework/polygon and use it as you need.

Thats correct.

Ultimately i would like to do a elevational drawing of the adjacent building facade which shows what shadow impacts of the proposed building.

if you have both buildings as models and draw an elevation marker with "Infinite" depth + go under the Model Effects' settings for your elevation marker and check "Vectorial 3D Hatching" option. You'll then get shadow castings on your buildings - use 3D window's sun settings or make "custom" settings for it under Elevation tool's Model Effect settings as well ...

the elevation marker only produces shadows from building in front of the marker. However i want to produce shadows generated from buidlings behind the marker. unless this has changed in v9 as i am still in 8.1
