changing roof pens in elevation vs. plan

This one might be easy for you experienced joes (and janes!) out there.
My roof objects appear as solid lines in the roof plan, and hidden lines in the floor plan. That's great, and makes me really happy AC did that right out of the box. I also found that I can change the pens of the objects in the settings dialog. There are a LOT of variables in there, as well as several different floor plan display options, and I've tried a million combinations and can't quite get what I want:
-I'd like to see my roof object be one solid color when viewed from above (roof plan) so I can make it a normal pen weight.
-I want it dashed and a different color (lighter pen) when viewed in the story below
-I want it a solid line and a third color (I'd settle for the same color as when viewed from above) in elevations.

The dashed line vs. solid line thing I figured out. The color has me stumped, though. Right now, if I make my roof a bold line in the elevation, the hidden line in my floorplan is WAY too heavy. If I make that lighter, then my roof looks too light in elevation (though, thankfully, it's a solid line).

Try this.
Set you roof to be "Projected with Overhead".
Set it to show on the current storey and however many storeys above that you need to see it.
The "Uncut" line is the one you will see from the storey above and in elevation (also in the current storey if your roof is below the floor cut plane).
The "Overhead" line is the one you will see in the current storey if the roof is above the floor cut plane.

The only problem with this is that the project preference option to show a solid line type for elements above the home storey no longer works.
That only works if you have the roof set to "Outlines only" but then you lose control of the pen colours.

One word:
Pen sets.
... that´s actually two words.

Thanks Barry. That gets me most of the way there. My line colors and types are now what I want, but "Projected with Overhead" makes it so I see the cut through my roof (see attached screenshot) which i think will be distracting to the contractor. Is there a way around this?

On this PARTICULAR project, I am not going to use the roof plan, so I found that using the Overhead All projection method gets me the results I want, for now... but when I try AC on my next commercial project, i'm probably going to want a roof plan, so I'd like to figure this out for the future.

Hi,

I find that if you set your roof planes to 'Outlines Only' in floor plan display then the floor plan cut plane will not affect how they are projected in plan view. Outlines only as I understand, does not respect the floor cut plane. Its more of a way of showing the roof plane extremes, in other words the top, bottom and connecting members between the top and bottom.

Then if you select the roof/s and under 'outlines' change the 'uncut line' to the linetype that you want to see on the roof elements home storey. Also set the 'uncut line pen' directly below. Take note of this pen number as you will need to assign a different colour and lineweight for this pen number in the roof plan view pen set. Save the view from the roofs' home storey and call it floor plan.

Then for the roof plan jump up a storey and go to options>project preferences>construction elements and as long as you have the roof set to show on 'Home and One Storey above' you can assign the linetype you want for your roof plan view by changing the 'Above Home Storey' linetype.

Save a view from the 'higher' storey. The view should show the linetype you have just set under in 'Above Home Storey'. Now all you do is create a pen set that assigns a different colour and lineweight to the pen number you chose for 'uncut line pen' above.

This takes a bit of setting up but then you can create a template that sets the roof settings as a favourite and the construction elements display to save you time in the future.

Hope this helps.
