I remember that something as basic as measuring distances (for checking rather than documenting) only required a short cut and didn't require the need to use the 'dimension' tool, but I can't remember what it was. Can somebody help?

Place a user origin at the starting point (alt+shift) or (option+shift(mac))
Then move your curser to the point you want to know the distance of. Read the distance from the coordinate pallet.

ArchiCAD 10 will include a Measure command.
