no witness line with elevation dimensions

When I use the elevation dimension in a section or elevation there is no witness line function: the first click on the screen places the actual dimension every time. If I then select it, I still cannot edit any witness line. This means I also cannot place several elevation points in one command. Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing?

Dave:

With the Dimensioning Tool selected, look in the Info Box for the Geometry Methods, there are 4 of them, and the first 2 place a single marker, the second 2 place a string of markers.
