Hello
What is the current official advice regarding ArchiCAD working directly in Onedrive/cloud folders?
We are having data storage issues (lots of space being used) which appear to be due to a combination of the way both ArchiCAD saves and Onedrive syncs/backs up.
Previous post suggest that you should work locally and then copy to the cloud for backing up?
Surely that cannot be the current advice?

AFAIK nothing has changed, due to how Onedrive (and iCloud for that matter) is handling files and changes to files.
Until this stays the same there is not much that can be done on Archicads side, at least that is my understanding.

Thanks for the reply.
So presumably most people are just ignoring the advice and hoping for the best or just working locally and relying on third party back up software (?). Seems a faff when so many are working between home and office these days.
We are not suffering any data losses but are requiring a large amount of data storage which is several times the amount of our actual data apparently due to multiple retained backups - not clear how much is due to ArchiCAD and how much is Onedrive compliancy but if the official line is that you cannot use ArchiCAD on cloud based file storage we would have stuck with a box in the corner of the office!

I use iCloud Drive which syncs my Desktop and Documents folders using the inbuilt feature of macOS and have been since its introduction. I experienced issues previously where every time I saved an Archicad file a number was appended to the end but this seemed to have been resolved since an update to Archicad 25 or could have been one of the incremental updated to macOS. I haven't had any issues recently. That's not to say there could be issues though.

When working between home and office, I connect to the office network via VPN and then work at home as if I am in the office.
Direct access to network files - it is a little slower of course.
Does you cloud backup have settings where you can say how many archive copies it retains?

That's what we used to do until we went cloud based.
The amount of backups is something we are currently exploring with our IT support but it appears that MS Sharepoint/Onedrive retains (by default) multiple copies which presumably is made worse by the way ArchiCAD saves (?)
We were obviously aware that you need to be careful with saving an ensuring synchronisation is complete before changing locations but not that the official guidance was not to work directly in cloud based folders.

Many (most?) cloud stage services allow some folders to be synced the local drive and some not. Maybe you can set it so the folders where the backups are stored are only on the cloud drive.

I completely forgot that this was a thing... We moved to Sharepoint recently and have not had any issues with AC, though we are syncing via a NAS. This maybe due to a combination of our relatively small files so far, upload speed and data safety settings, though the last one does not seem to be a factor since my even newer AC instal seems to have defaulted to saving every step.

Auto saving of files does not affect the actual PLN file that is saved on your system.
Auto save files are stashed away in your user profile and are a constant backup of your PLN, but not in the job folder, so they will not affect any cloud syncing, no matter what data safety settings you are using.
