Flash drive problem

I have one of those little USB flash drives that provide very fast and portable storage for file transfer from 'puter to 'puter. It is recognized on one Compaq and one HP computer, but on the 3rd HP, it can't be detected, despite all the usual diagnostics. All machines are relatively new, and all are running Windows XP Home.

Any idea what's going on here? I have tried it in several USB ports, to no avail.

Disk mapping. You don't have a free letter - and the flashes can't be the last in the line, after the mapped network disks.

Or sometimes they are detected as an already mapped drive (say 😧 or E:) and therefore can't be seen.

Either way you need to go to where the drive mapping is controlled to sort it.

OK - Vanna, can I buy a vowel?

How can I fix this disk mapping problem? Almost identical other machines don't have this problem.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management

This is where you can control the drive mapping.
Right click on a drive and you can change it's letter.
You shoud see the thumb drive there if you have it plugged in.
