More about Laptops

Am trying to reduce my footprint again - moving to a smaller place and needing to get down to a laptop and my big Samsung 23.1" LCD. Currently have a nice Sony 16.1" screen GRT-170- P4 2.8 and all and saw one of the newer IBM fast Centrino units at ACU West. Since there seems to be a dearth of info about Centrinos using AC, can anyone comment on the differences??

Dell has a workstation laptop that seems quite good ----BUT VERY expensive for my budget. It is a Centrino with a 7200 RPM hard drive. Amazing..Will be needing the info fairly soon.

Lazlo,

Just checked in the control panel>settings>appearance and it looks as though you can change the size of the fonts globally in XP PRO anyway.

I thought about that also before I bought, but it is fine. It's brighter and crisper, doesn't flicker like a CRT. When I go back to my old laptop that is 1024 It seems like I can see every dot, where as the new one is more like looking at a piece of paper. The wide aspect ratio seem like it was designed for ArchiCAD becuase the navigator now seem like the right proportion to the rest of the work space.

Have you verified that this changes the fonts in palettes (like the Coordinate Box for example?)
It seems like it does not affect palette fonts (which I think is obviously crucial to using ArchiCAD efficiently)

I'm not quite sure which one of the fields to attempt to edit the text size in. Any ideas and I will give it a try, although I don't want to spend the next hour screwing around with text sizes. I am supposed to be working.........

Perhaps we should defer to David since he's actually driving the new and improved unit. As well it occurred to me that Lazlo could easily "turn down" the resolution to 1440x900 or perhaps there is an option in between. Again it's David's turn here........

If it were me I would definitely go for the higher resolution, in this field it seems bigger is better, period.

I agree - and I poked around in there lots and was not successful at changing Palette font size.

in any case- I think Palette fonts would only be a viewing problem with ArchiCAD on a 15" LCD (moderate size screen) with 1600x1200 pixels (Dell notebooks could achieve this type of resolution on a moderate size LCD)

On a 17" I can imagine it should look fine.

I admit: I ran ArchiCAD on a 15" LCD with 1600x1200 and it made the Palette text much too small (Coordinate Box for example).

I'm happy with the font size as is. The brighter sceen helps the viewing experience.

Since I started this thread, some new info:::: My Sony P4 2.8 w/ 60 GB hd has now been updated with a new 7200 rpm HD - For those who are mechanically challenged it is six screws and about 5 minutes to change! The results are so amazing that I feel compelled to report! My trusty HP desktop with a 2.53 chip and an 80 GB drive and a gig of ram starts in about 45 seconds (from scratch) the laptop used to take almost a minute and a half to do the same. Now the laptop starts in 40 sec. The transformation of the unit is like getting a new computer with all the bells and whistles. AC is as responsive as I have ever noted.

AND I don't need to spend for a new unit!
