New G5 computer

I am in the process of doing research and purchasing a new G5 computer w/ 23" wide screen and color inkjet printer. I have not purchased a new Mac in 7 years and I am still working in 8.1 on AC5.0. So this is a big jump for me and I was wondering if anyone can recommend the best options for running the current AC.

I would imagine I will have somewhat of a learning curve. I also want to consider doing some Digital video work on this computer and am trying to understand that if I get the new computer to run AC do I need additional hardware to run a program like Final Cut Express?, or is the amount of hardware to run AC sufficient to run this other program?

Any configuration of G5 will do what you want. Some are just faster than others. The dual processors will not help ArchiCAD directly but do help by running multiple programs faster.

I recommend that you get the fastest machine you can afford, keeping in mind that you may want to replace it in two to three years (with a 6 to 10 GHz model?)

The 23" display is fantastic. You will be happy with it for many years to come.

I use the 'low end' G5 with 512mb at home (I split 50/50 work/home) and a P4/2.5mhz/512mb at work often on the same, sometimes large, projects with no discernable performance difference, altho' the G5 'feels' faster ( I don't time any processes as apart from high end renders things are quick enough). I've had the G5 from first release in Aus and not one crash in Achicad or any program - hell, I hardly turn the thing off as it powers off and sleeps silently. Whilst the P4 is stable in Archicad it crashes regularly in Arcrobat/Word/Outlet/Photoshop etc. Get plenty of RAM but you will be really happy with the G5 - Panther is very nice also and Expose works well in archicad when you get used to it. Now if only Graphisoft will re-write the code for the 64 bit processor...

As you may know, the current incarnations of the G5 have been in production a long time, an upgraded G5 was rumored months ago however IBM have failed to produce enough faster G5s quickly enough.

It is widely predicted that we will see new G5s announced at Apple WWDC in June, I would hold off till then, we may see macs running at 3.0Ghz.

There are also rumors of new dispalys, perhaps with 30inch screens!
