I opened it up and saw that what I was seeing was the full 2D view and there was nothing in the 2D symbol, so I put what I wanted in teh 2D symbol and saved the part but I still see the 2D view of it.
Does anyone know what I need to do to change that?

The 2D Symbol is usually shown only if there is no 2D Script.
If there is a 2D Script then you have to use the FRAGMENT2 command of GDL to display the 2D Symbol.

It is quite simple
1 Place 2 objects, explode one object. (close to origin of model)
2 Select elements and copy to clipboard
3 Open object (File/Libraries and Object/Open Object)
4 Delete all script in the 2D script
5 Paste the copied elements in your 2D symbol
6 Save and close.
You might want to check if the element on the floorplan is aligning in 3D.
You can do that by placing a wall check both positions to it.
Or you can change some code:
4 Delete all script and add this script:
PROJECT2 3,270,1
FRAGMENT2 1,1
5 Paste the copied elements in your 2D symbol
6 Adjust the copied elements to align with projection
7 When you are done aligning, delete all 2D script
8 Save and close.
