i'm a new user of ArchiCAD (version eight), when trying to save a new object what filetype am i meant to save the object as- i know previous versions saved them as .gsm filetypes which is no longer an option.
i've read in the manual about the Master Window Controls but dont fully understand what its saying.
Can someone help please?

cheers,

The .gsm is the only file type now (.dor, .win, etc are now subtypes). This should be automatic. Are you trying to <save as> from the 3D view? This would limit you to picture or drawing files. Otherwise I can't imagine what you are doing wrong.

yeah, i'm trying the <save as> from the 3D window because i havent figured out how to draw the 3D object in the Master Window Controls dialogue box.
I hope i'm not being totally dense.....

I get it now. Kind of dense of me, I shoulda figgered you was usin' the main 3D window to save something you had modeled as a new library part. Go to File > GDL Objects > Save 3D model as... and choose "ArchiCAD Object File" (this should be easy as it is the only option now )

The fun part is when you decide you want to start editing the library part you just saved.

PS. Since you are new to the program you might want to consider coming to ACUWest. There may still be room left and the airfares are still cheap. David's classes on GDL alone are worth the trip.
Karl Ottenstein will be dealing with this topic more closely, that of GDL without GDL - ie every trick in the book with autoscripting for object making and a little bit more than that (ie opening and modifying objects).

I will be doing a workshop for Intermediate to Advanced users, and people will need a basic knowledge of creative GDL to get something out of it.

There isnt a creative GDL for GDL-beginners workshop at ACUWest, we would do so if there were an extra day; we had TWO workshops for beginners at ArchiCAD University in Nottingham (3 day event) and TWO for intermediate to advanced.
