This may be obvious to some users, and while I don't claim to be a GDL guy, I just found it out. On a PC, if you right click on a library part and select 'Properties', you can find out many things about the part, including the scripts and preview info.

Check out the attachment. The same thing probably exists on a mac's 'Get Info' dialog.

If you already knew this - I'd believe you!!

Cheers,

Yep, I knew about both the PC's ability and the Mac's lack. And why can't Mac users see the library part previews in the finder? Instead there is a QuickTime icon.

I am becoming increasingly concerned by Graphisoft's apparent lack of concern for supporting the Mac. Perhaps because they don't face much competition there (just Vectorworks) they just take it for granted. While they can probably get away with it for a while, it certainly can't do them any good to p__s off their oldest and most loyal customers (imagine if us old timers all start writing like Adalbert )

I have heard rumors of Revit developing a Mac version. There may be nothing to this, but it could be a very effective way for Autodesk to undermine Graphisoft's base.

If they haven't already (and I have heard that this may be the case) Graphisoft needs to get some of their programmers back on the Mac. Beta testing alone is not enough to ensure even compatibility let alone quality. Besides, in the many years I have been observing the industry, it is clear that Mac programmers produce consistently better products. (For example: Microsoft's R&D budget is more than Apple's gross revenues.) Word, Excel, Photoshop, ArchiCAD (of course) and many other leading software titles started out on the Mac, which is what gave them the quality that led to their success. Graphisoft should continue to take advantage of this and not just coast on the quality and vision of the original developers.

Off the soapbox now.

Link.
uh. no.

on a mac, it thinks that they're quicktime movies which often sound like a jackhammer if you play them!

Matthew and Ben.
The reason you guys are having the problem with QT and *.GSM files is because there is an audio format that has the GSM extension.
All you need to do to be rid of the problem is to go into you QT prefs and simply uncheck the GSM file association for QT.

Yes, I know, this is not a problem for me in Windows. What I don't know is how to fix it in Mac OS X, and so far no one on this forum seems to have an answer for this. Are there any programmers at Graphisoft using Macs? If so does anyone one there have a fix for this?

no good ben, see attached, even after a log-out and a reboot.

i'm with matthew 100% on this: graphisoft's mac development seems only to be a matter of recompiling the PC stuff with little thought to the usage, UI, etc that make macs macs. you know the quality sound a £25000+ car door makes compared to cheaper models? that's the difference.

But seriously.

Is there a comprehensive list of this stuff? I'll start.

No external database plugin.
No MS Project integration alternative.
No OLE alternative. (I know: It's between MS & Apple. How long will we wait for them?)
Multiprocessing ignored. (Hurts windows too, hurts macs more, and has for years)
Can't use the F keys.
No toolbar. (I wouldn't use it, but many would)
The mysterious lag in the Mac 2256 update. Distressingly typical of recent updates in execution and communication.
Silence on the IBM G5 optimized compiler, and on the floating-point abilities of the Power architecture.
"A: Motorola built AltiVec into the G4 and G5 processors." Who did what to the G5?

Gone but not forgotten:
8.0 v1.
The 8.0 video card compatibility document where the Wintel cards are state-of-the-art with 128MB and the Mac cards are 2+ years old with 32MB max.
The windows-only 8.0 USB dongle updater.
Apparent lack of a single meeting on the subject of dropping OS9, when everyone else already had, including Apple, then pinning bad performance on "having to" support OS9.

The User Guide contains no Mac screen shots. If the people publishing the books don't have Macs, who does?

Thanks James. Very well put.

Now I wonder if we'll hear anything from GS on the subject.

good idea james
  • no full screen 3D mode (not necessarily useful for everybody, but windows has it)
  • system level resource support (is often emulated to make do) because they won't make the jump to cocoa?
[uh - sorry same link james - different angle]

maybe give it a few weeks for others to add anything they may know about and then an open petition to graphisoft? let's see just what proportion of mac users there are out there using archiCAD.

maybe djordje would be kind enough to split the last few posts and put them under a new heading in the appropriate place?
