pdf's by their nature are not editable. You can, in some instances, 'clip' images from the pdf and edit them in photo editing software like photoshop. This depends on the permissions and security the author of the pdf set.

If all your after is it make the background transparent, and if you are able to 'clip' images from the pdf - then, you should be able to select and delete the the background color in your photo editing software. After placing the newly created image file in ArchiCAD the 'transparent background' feature should then be available.

WARNING! If the PDF you're importing is a vector graphics file (including text), you will destroy it if you edit it in Photoshop or any photo-editing software.
The photo-editors make pixelized resolution-dependant bitmaps of everything. This might be what you want ,but you should be aware.

To edit a vector PDF, you need to use Adobe Illustrator (or something else that can access the embedded Postscript code without destroying it. I've heard that Leopard's new Preview has some PDF editing skills - I've not tested it.
