ArchiCAD 11 will come soon (as much as I suspect..)
What can AC 11 do better than AC10?

Why architect would need connection with estimating software?
I don't know much about the commercial world, never did, never will... but, in the residential world providing a material takeoff is important, and there are a lot of us out there who only have interest in that world. So, for my work, generating a takeoff is important to make a living. Graphisoft has done a great job ignoring this. I do generate material list with AC, and despite AC's obscure way of doing it, I can do a decent one. But it is really a pain. If you make a small change you waist a lot of unnecessary time due to Graphisoft's refusal to upgrade this retarted function. "Where's the money" It is not in the calc function for Graphisoft... but it is important for my wallet. Residential builders want a spreadsheet with quantity takeoffs for the plans they use.

If it help you to know how many AC users are interested in the calc functions, I have been providing a download link ( http://www.thompsonplans.com/files/TappingCalcMenu.pdf ) to a user manual a reseller gave me. I was told it was for resellers so they could learn how to instruct their clients how to use it (don't think it worked). I have only posted that link a few times, and I have had 495 AC users download that manual just this year.

Is this a part of your standard scope of work or do you charge an extra fee for this service? Isn't it against the AIA standards of professional practice for architects to take responsibility of quantities?

I was told by someone who is supposed to know, that Constructor can not .
I like this one
Do you want me to start posting the names and contact information of the of the people I talked with at VICO sales that told me the Archicad that comes with Constructor is exactly the same ArchiCAD we have, and that the programs are not compatible and that Import and export between the programs is not possible?

I have no reason not to believe this is true. Do you think it is silly to use this source for my information or something?

If you read my posts you will understand that they are as much for the purpose of inquiry and clarification as they are about sharing my observations about what I have found.

I am not the one who is ranting obscenities, insults or saying shut up.

If you are an ArchiCAD user and you want to buy Constructor so you can do what you already do better, there is a long list of information you will need to know about Constructor before you can make that very expensive decision. Information that is not to be found in the sales brochures they have posted on the web.

Perhaps they did not see the corrections that have been made to their brochures to correct misinformation the I pointed out. It was probably just a typo, and my pointing it out may have noting to do with changing it, but it could also been seen as slick marketing language they got called on and had to undo it before they get sued.

I am doing my research because I want what VICO has to offer, and I am sharing with you what find, also asking many times for some one who knows, to correct me if I am wrong about any facts I am commenting about.

You and I have never used ArchiCAD Residential or the other creative marketing versions that have been offered, they are smoke. But this does not mean we know nothing about it and are not qualified to make useful observations about it.

Perhaps the readers who want to refute my observations are the ones who are uninformed, or as misinformed as they think I am.

Perhaps they are the ones who know nothing about Primavera, Monte Carlo Simulations, Microsoft Project Works, the MEP Modeler, the 5D Presenter, or ArchiCAD's Calculation features.

Perhaps they are the ones who have no experience exporting ArchiCAD building information data into other Construction software programs.

Perhaps they do not know how the "VICO Construction Pro Software Bundle" is packaged and sold now. You can get this information for your self. No need for me to post it here.

Please do.

Paul asked me to be discrete about sharing the pricing data he sent me so I will not post it here because I am not sure if that would be ok with him or not. You can get the same information as I have I am sure.

What is revealing to me about the pricing data is how it shows a little more about the contents of what you get when you buy Constructor than what is presented in the brochures on the web.

It is still not very clear. For example, there is no mention of ArchiCAD anywhere in the pricing data, other than to say that you can upgrade from ArchiCAD 10 or 11 to Constructor for a certain amount (about 1/2) + the subscription fees for the other programs, which by the way, they will not let you exclude from the bundle even if you already have a it.

Just from curiosity - are you an architect or architect builder? I say it from both sides - for a long time I worked for residential company, and we never have been providing takeoffs - unless we have been paid extra (once I remember) - and the we used tools included in AC. Not the most fancy way - but using Constructor tools - probably would not help - it requires a lot of in front work with setting standards, databases - and the produce is full estimate not just material takeoff. It is like going to "kill the fly with the tank". If you know what I mean.
Graphisoft has done a great job ignoring this. I do generate material list with AC, and despite AC's obscure way of doing it, I can do a decent one. But it is really a pain. Residential builders should buy Constructor then. Full estimating software included (and more). Worth the price if you use it on the daily basis.

As I mentioned - I still think Calculate menus could have few more options.

I believe back in v4.1 or maybe 4.55 objects did have $/sf or $/sfca entry fields...

The software had the promise of becoming more of a database if you will <sniff> - but as I recall each library update reset all the data to $0 (gee that was well thought out?) then we entered what I recall a dark age of cross-platform zeal & an incredibly complex calculation module that, in the end was deemed too much & was simplified to what we now have in the stock version...

But I still keep wondering hoping we will get working stairs, ahem...

Today's 'pony' would be an object library & materials attributes so well conceived, organized & executed that it eliminated most of the need for external for sale library parts (today's particular 'exercise' begs a single, better 'super' tree)...
Rick Thompson is right on.

Check out this chapter in the download he has posted:

The Future of Listing with ArchiCAD

Without making promises for Graphisoft, here are a few samples of the possibilities for the future:
A . API Based Solutions
1. With the API technology providing an avenue for greater localization, it seems only natural that it will infiltrate
the Calculate Menu in the near future. Currently, API solutions are in the works to help facilitate the creation
of formatted templates and links to external databases such as RS Means.
B . Interaction with Vendors
1. Vendors of building components are already converting their databases to a more global network. It is eminent
that not only the 3d physical information will become commonplace, but also the specifications. Once these
become available, the Virtual Building will contain much more critical information to facilitate a project with
continuity.
2. With the Calculate menu it will be possible to create Reference Notes for construction documents, general
specifications for plans and full specifications for each project.

Sounds good to me.

This is why there are 2 different applications -- these are 2 different professions: Architect vs. Contractor. Design/Build is a Contractor-managed process; "Residential Builder" is not the same as "Residential Architect."
