Dear Archi-Talkers,

Have you ever been in a situation where you were questioned about your level of skill using ArchiCAD, and you have only your own words to rate your abilities? With Graphisoft's recently launched on-line testing resource, now you can measure your ArchiCAD knowledge against an authorized global standard. Gave the ol' test another crack today, but am seriously doubting some of the questions/answers. One of the many odd questions was:

What do you need to do with a DXF/DWG file in order to incorporate its data into your Project file?

a- You must Merge the DXF/DWG file into the ArchiCAD Project
or
b- You must attach the DXF/DWG file as an XREF to your Project

Ummm last I heard - you *must* not have to do anything because you can do either really.

I won't get started on the rest (for lack of time and desire right now), but am hoping GS will reword/rethink and recheck the answers before they take this seriously and start handing out certificates (or not).

Just my two cents.

Okay one more!

Can someone please answer this for me!:

The operating systems that will run ArchiCAD 9 are

a) Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Window XP Pro, MacOS X 10.2 or later

b) Microsoft Windows XP Home or Microsoft Windows XP Pro

c) Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Window XP Home, MAC OS X 10.0 or later

d) Mac only

Is it a or is it b, is it a or is it b? Oh I give up - both are correct!

I think the key word here is "incorporate". To bring the data into your file to be able to manipulate it, you would have to merge. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that was my take on the question.

Actually, according to Graphisoft's website only A is correct. No Windows ME, XP Home or OS X 10.0.

Hi Millard

I guess I won't tell all my XP Home clients about it then

I think I was lucky to get 94% the first time I took the damn test!

Cheers,

Sure, that's the company line. But, that's the point Link is trying to make about this and other bogus questions: just because the official answer is A, doesn't mean it is the right answer. ArchiCAD runs just fine on XP Home, for example. 😉

From reading the thread, and not having tried the Challenge: it seems to me that the test should be structured in 'areas of competence' (say: basic drafting and modelling tools methods and tricks; document and layout setup; work environment setup; network library and teamwork management; gdl something else; dwg export-import blah blah; rendering etc.).

So in order to qualify as 'solo draftsman' trainee and joining a somehow structured office you need so many points in section 1 and way less in any other sections, to qualify as a 'cad manager' in a small firm you need something else, to qualify as an ArchiCAD trainer for a distributor you need this and that, etc. The way it seems to be now, '30%' or '66%' are not very descriptive of what you actually can and cannot do.

[Extreme example: it is definitely only a few consultants and perhaps some übermanager in the industry that need to know whether ArchiCAD runs on XP Home or not for a given project type on a given computer.]
