Archicad Team Work

My question:

I would like to know if when working in a team work every team mate should save its own draft.plc file? Or do we need only one plc draft file?

Thank you.

Yes, each person should save their own PLC to their local machine. This makes it possible to save changes without committing to a send and receive, and provides a bit of security in case of a network or server failure.

Just to emphasize this... be aware that AutoSave does not work over a network. If you don't have a local copy, there is no AutoSave should you experience a crash.

Umm... yeah it does. We have 10 people autosaving over a network all day, both with and without saved PLC files.

Trust me... don't count on it!

I don't know what to tell you, but it's worked nearly flawlessly for a year, with projects ranging from 2 to 10 people.

OK... this is important enough that I will say it one more time

Autosave does not work over a network.

Try this:

1. Open a new project draw a room (4 walls) then share the project, putting the .plp on a server or any other computer on a network.

2. Sign in; draw another 4 walls; do a Send and Receive

3. Draw 10 additional walls (however many it takes to trigger an autosave) and you will see a notice that the program is performing an autosave in the Status Bar at the bottom of your screen.

4. pull the plug out of the computer (crash)

5. Restart your computer, restart ArchiCAD

When the notification of an Autosaved document comes up, notice that the extension is .plp; you will be resigned in to the shared project and any information that was not sent there as a result of a "Send and Receive" will not be there.

So... whenever you sign in to a Teamwork Project the first thing you should do after signing in is to SAVE a Local Copy (.plc).

Lastly, I would say this: Get in the habit of Saving your work often whether it's a shared project or not... it's the surest way to make sure that you don't lose a days work.

Tom,

You have an exceptionally robust network with a top notch IT guy. That probably has something to do with your experience. Not everyone is so fortunate. I don't think others should assume they will have the same results you do.

I am sure Woody has seen the problems first hand. Thus the warning. I agree with him that for the average user saving the PLC locally is the safest route.

If your IT guy is Saint Jude (patron saint of lost causes) and you do the test described in my last post, you will have the same results.
The program appears to be Autosaving but it is not. When working on a Teamwork project, the file in the Temporary folder is the .plp (which does not save anything without a Send and Receive).

I can't tell you the number of times I have seen this problem first hand but I can tell you that there have been many, many tears shed by clients who failed to heed my advice to save a local copy after signing into a Teamwork project.

If Saint Jude could talk to you he would tell you to SAVE A LOCAL COPY.

Just to clarify; the above should read:

When working on a Teamwork project, the file in the Temporary folder is the .plp (which does not save anything without a Send and Receive) unless you are working on a Local Copy.
