Instead, use the Custom Profile tool. There you can draw with a fill any shape that is the section of the railing. Then choose to apply it to the wall and/or the beam tool.

Just to clarify: the correct name for the tool is "Complex Profile" and it opens a "Profile Manager" distinct from the now-obsolete "Profiler."
Find this tool under the Design Menu.
Note also that by placing differing fills within the complex profile section that differing materials can be assigned
AND
using the alternate mouse click to bring up a pet palette, individual fill segments can have different surfaces.
