Basic shapes, I need a rectangular spiral.

If we had a rectangular spiral in the basic shapes (like a slinky toy) I could SEO it with the pipe spiral and create the stair rail in the picture below. Anyone have any ideas? Right now I've spent entirely too much time trying to do segments from morphed profiles and rotating them using the vertical increment. This approach is not working too well.
I've got to get this stair in there so I can start doing the bolder minder binder next to it. Next picture down..

This will take a bunch of time, but I think the morph bolders/rocks are going to work

Insert spiral 17/18 object, save as "whateveryouwant" edit GDL and modify the TUBE command with your section geometry.
I can't think nothing faster.
