how do I make the lines in 3D that create the edges of the beam profile "read" in 2D?

Turn it into a morph and control line visibility.
AFAIK there is no control in profiled beams for lines that make up the profile.

Exactly!!!!....why don't the "beams" with stepped situation actually SHOW how they are in plan?
For Pete's sake...they show how they are in 3D, in section..in elevation...........WHY not in plan view?

No time right now to test, Rob... but if you use the Wall Tool with the same profile to create the stairs, do the wall floor plan display options give you any better appearance? (Being a wall, the layer for the 'stairs' must have a different intersection priority than adjacent walls to prevent auto cleanup.)

I'll check the graphic 2D display lines with the "wall tool" instead.
Stupid that a beam simply WILL NOT show the 'real' lines it's projecting...........just dumb.
