Carpet Areas

Dear All,

Please correct me if I am wrong. When I place a Zone into a room and then if I insert a column into that room and update the Zones the area of that column is deducted. But if I insert a staircase from ArchiCAD Default Stairmaker and also from ArchiStair , the zone tool doesn't deduct that area. Is there any setting that I am missing? Pratically I believe this area has to be deducted from the carpet area of the room.

What is the altenative for this?

Thanks in advance.

cheers,
Srini.

Nope. Zones are generally meant to report room areas, not finish areas.

I think that's why many people will use separate slabs to model the finishes then be able to show them in renderings and get reports of their quantities.

Calculating Carpet Area is complex because of the width of the carpet roll. I use a flat wall the width of the roll and overlay the floor plan in a special layer.

This is still a "manual" task - sometimes the linear results are surprizing when the layout across is compared to the up-and-down layout alternative.

Zones can calculate a variety of gross and net areas. The details will depend on the scripting of the zone stamp. I generally steer clear of the net area calcs since they require the update zones command to recalculate.

Dwight is right about carpet take-offs. The zone areas can be used for rough budgets, but the actual take off should be done by the supplier/installer. There are too many variables with roll widths, pattern direction, etc. Often there is a trade off between having more seams (or seams in less desirable locations) and buying more carpet.

If you are just looking for budget numbers you can use the gross area with an allowance for waste.
