Display Problems: ATI Mobility Radeon 9600

I posted a Video Display problem Here in a post about the SE Library.

I am continually having this problem after attempting to work in the 3D window. The only fix is to Close AC application and restart.

Sometimes when I have two sessions of AC open, 1 session of AC may have this Display problem while the other session is working fine....?

At Video Card compatibility Site my ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 (M10) was rated okay by ~/archiben.

Is anyone else using the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, and if so what Driver date. Attached image is my Display adapter Properties. I am of the "school" : if it ain't broken do not fix it. So I do not like to mess with drivers unless it is the culprit. All else is working well.

uh oh. i guess the difference must be the drivers. it's certainly not the best card in the world, but i don't get the kind of rubber-banding you described in the post you linked to.

i have no idea what version of the ATI driver i'm using because it's bundled into system updates by apple, which i update as and when there is one available: i have no control over my video card in the way that you do, but since i don't have the problems either i guess apple must be looking after me.

try ATI's website/support and see if they can offer anything in the way of advice?

If you cruise the gamer web sites (these are the people who genuinely exploit the capabilities of OpenGL cards in all their flavours, price points and configurations) the ATI adepts all point to video card drivers called the "Omega" drivers - these are developed and maintained by an enthusiast - not ATI.

Across the gaming web sites which are prime spots to go looking for advice on portable gear, the broad consensus appears to be one that says look to a third party for ATI fixes - Nvidea does alright on its own.

The current buzz on these sites is Dell's acquisition of Alienware, a maker of high end, graphics oriented laptops (do you really want to ask a guy who works with spreadsheets all day what you should be looking for in a laptop?)

To paraphrase Dwight - Think like a gamer!

The difference in performance may also be that I am actually using a Laptop with the "chip set" for the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 and not actually the card.

ATI informed me that it is the laptop manufacturers web site that I need to go to search for the driver and not the ATI web site.

A hunting I will go ....... A hunting I will go....

Based on my laptop manufacturers web site (Sagernotebook.com/support) I have the most current driver.

Sager is sold by a mail order group in Florida (among others) who have an online forum - PCTorque, I believe. This was one of the places I haunted while agonizing over the purchase of a Sager or a Voodoo (made right here in Alberta!).

This PCTorque forum is where I first heard of the fabled 'Omega' drivers. You might pose the question there.
