Refer to the Object Making with ArchiCAD book which hopefully came with your ArchiCAD. David Nicholson-Cole wrote it and it is well written taking you through the whole process and explaining different approaches.

For a more advanced GDL scripting advice get the GDL Cookbook

Best of luck

That is a pain, I just gave it a go and the only way I could do it was to do the following

1 Draw some slabs as a door/window, select them

2 Save as... GDL Script

3 Open the GDL Script as a GDL Script (whereas you used to have a choice and be able to open a script as a door or window)

4 Go to the 3d script window, copy the contents

5 Create a new door/window object and paste into the 3d sript

All of which is a lot more laborious than AC7

A slightly easier way than I described above is to create a new object and drag and drop the slabs/walls into the 3d script window of the new object.

I'm still a bit puzzeled as to how you save the new object as door though.... watch this space

Elou:
If you save the elements from the 3D window, a small dialog box comes up after hitting the Save button which has 3 options for saving the part as either an object, window or door (as well as binary vs. editable GDL script). Saving the elements from the 2D window does not present this diaolg box. There is also a way to change the part's subtype (which determines if it is an object, window, door, light, etc.) from the main window of the object itself, but this is probably not the easiest solution for you. HTH.

That's what I did but I'm not getting the options to choose what kind of object I want to create ie Object, Door, Window or Script.

Any idea what I'm missing?

Thanks

In the Dialog, click the Save button, and THEN will come up the Dialog letting you choose the type of Object to Save.

Exactly. No extra work is required.

And, a new feature in 9.0 makes creating non-rectangular windows and doors easier ... no editing to create a GDL WALLHOLE command required. If one of your slabs is given WALLHOLE as its ID, then when you save your elements as a door, this WALLHOLE slab determines the geometry of the hole. A simple, but very useful addition.

(For newbies: without such a WALLHOLE slab, ArchiCAD [all versions] will cut a hole in the wall that is the bounding rectangle of the door/window geometry that you created. Fine for a rectangular door/window with no trim.)

You're welcome. 😉 There are lots of such little thing in 9.0 that aren't necessarily listed in the 'product features' list. 😉

Cheers,
