Gradient Fills

I've tried the gradient fill trick and it didn't work.
When it says elevation view, what does it mean?
Section/Elevation tool with 3D Vectorial hatching, or;
A side Vies from a paralel 3D view?

I thought it was a gradient color fill trick!
