Why is it that in 19 every time I create a new detail and open that window it defaults to Grid display. Is there a setting somewhere to turn that default off so that I don't have to every time I make a detail? This never occurred in any of the other versions I've had from 4.1 till now.

I think the program has always worked this way as far as I remember.
Unfortunately, at this point there is no setting to change this behaviour.

Now that ARCHICAD 20 has been announced I can talk about it:

So in ARCHICAD 20 by default the Construction Grid will always be turned off. So if you create a new Viewpoint you will not see the Construction Grid in it by default.
