Handrail icon cannot be selected when drawing stairs

I cannot select Handrail icon when I draw stairs.  Other icons turn blue when I click on them but I cannot select Handrail one when I want to draw handrail and stairs at the same time.  I would appreciate if somebody could help.

I'm new to Archicad and still learning.  I do not have anything in the favorite though.  I may have to consider uninstall the program and re-install it.

I don't think you need to do that just yet.

Just open the default template (File menu > New) that comes with Archicad.

See if that works.

That should have favourites for stairs.

If that is working OK, then we can try importing some of those favourites into you file to see if that helps.

I do see two folders in the favorite folder.  In 05 stairs folder, I do see several stairs.  Is that what you are referring to?

These are the favourites - the little triangle next to the settings button.

You won't see that same as mine as this is my personal template, but selecting anything in here will reset the stair tool settings.

I am just hoping it may clear the glitch that is stopping you from selecting the associated railings.

I am not sure if it will or not, but it is worth a try.

Appreciate you taking the time to reply.  I tried selecting a new stair but still cannot select the rails....

Very strange.

You do see the buttons like this ...

And not like this (completely greyed out) ...

And is the stair direction button working?

Also what version of Archicad are you using and what operating system (I probably should have asked that already).

I am using Archicad 25 Education on a windows PC.  Here is what I see on my screen.  The rails are not completely greyed out but they won't turn blue. And the stair direction does work.

Thanks for the image.

I am really at a loss.

I can't understand why one of the buttons is fainter than the other.

Neither is selected otherwise they would be blue as you mentioned before.

Things I would try.

Restart your machine (you'd be surprised what that can fix!).

Make sure Archicad is up to date, you can check for updates in the HELP menu.

If you really want to you could re0install Archicad, but i am pretty sure that is not the problem - but who knows for sure.

Even though this is an educational license (there should be no difference to the commercial one as far as the software goes), you could maybe try contacting your local Archicad support people?

Solution

Are you running Windows 11 by chance?

Looks like the button a bit darker is actually indeed selected. GS mentioned it somewhere that with Win 11 there are some issues with how decorations are drawn, and until they do an update the selected state of a button is sadly not really well distinguishable.

Wow, yes, I am running Windows 11.  I'll wait for the update.  Thank you so much.
